March 2022 – Leyland URC Scouts are 90 Years old

The Group was started in March 1932 – below is an excerpt from the Cub Leaders notebook.

LEYLAND CONGREGATIONAL CUBS

THE BEGINNING

(by Raymond Phipps – Akela from July 1936 to September 1939)

The Pack was formed in March 1932 by Mr H Barker who became GSM.

Mrs Sherwin was appointed CM with Miss Moore her assistant and these two people built the pack up to standard. The Pack life was a very happy one and although Scout work was somewhat neglected other Cub activities were practiced with success. The Pack had many rambles and expeditions in the country thanks to the Old Wolves previously mentioned. In 1933 the pack was still going strong and at the end of the year there were eighteen Cubs. Later on, these officers were forced to cease their work with the Pack and Mr J Wildman was appointed CM. This man continued the good work and the Pack kept on the upward grade. In June 1935 a district Jamberette was held in Leyland, and this was attended by Sir Percy Everett (Deputy Chief Commissioner). At this event the Cubs put on a display in which a party of Settlers were attacked by Indians. The Cubs put up a very good show and were complimented on their fine effort. The Jamberette lasted throughout the weekend and drew a great number of the public. In 1935 Mr E Grice took over the Pack and did good work until he was made GSM in June 1936.

The record book this excerpt was taken from is held in the Group archive by the GSL.

Wonderful walk around the Tolkein Trail at Stoneyhurst. 37 Beavers, Cubs Scouts, Leaders, Parents and family members enjoyed a walk of around 10k. Skimming stones was the favourite sport at our lunch stop by the river.

Red Rose 2018

This year’s highlight for the Scouts was Red Rose 2018, a week long, international Scout Camp held in August in the Lake District. There were around 3000 Scouts from many different countries gathered together to enjoy the comradeship and adventure arranged by the West Lancashire Scouts team.

Our subcamp had been allocated Australia as it’s theme.

St Georges Day Celebrations

This year’s St Georges Day celebrations were very different to our previous ones. This time we met at Lostock Hall Recreation Field and paraded through the local streets, returning to the recreation field to renew our promises and for a presentation of one of our top awards for one of our local leaders.

Fun and games was the order of the day following the ceremonies. There were Inflatables, a Zorb, various bases including a drumming come and try it, Hot Dogs, Sweets, Smores, Toilet game and much more.
